Pergamos: The Worldly Church - from the "Call to Revival" Series

From "Pergamos: The Worldly Church: Part 1

"Words have Meaning" (On-line sermon video) -

In this series, I will be taking a look at the seven churches we find in Revelation, and that in itself should be a revelation!

That is just a play on words, but did you know, that Words CAN REALLY be fun! Words like palindromes.

Palindromes are words or phrases, that, when read, are the same backward or forward. For example: racecar, Hannah, dad, mom, a toyota, or step on no pets.

There's another word that REALLY sounds a bit strange: oxymoron.

It's a figure of speech in which opposite or contradictory ideas or terms are combined. Such as pretty ugly, jumbo shrimp, sweet sorrow, black light, virtual reality, sweet and sour chicken, or sophomore (which literally means wise moron).

But there's another oxymoron that's really, really hard to imagine.

·                 Ephesus: The __________________________ Church (2:1-7)

·                 Pergamos: The ________________________  Church (2:12-17)

·                 Thyatira: The __________________________ Church (2:18-29)

·                 Sardis: The ____________________________Church (3:1-6)

·                 Laodicea: The __________________________Church (3:14-22)

But what should characterize the true church? Take a Look at the following verses. John 17:13-19; 2 Cor. 6:14-7:1; Jas. 4:4; 1 John 2:15-17; 1 Peter 2:9;

Titus 2:11-14; Matthew 5:13-16.

"Who Satan Really Is" (on-line sermon video)

Now let's take a closer look at the Church located at Pergamus.  In Revelation 2:13 we read, "I know thy works, and where thou dwellest, even where Satan's seat is: and thou holdest fast my name, and hast not denied my faith, even in those days wherein Antipas was my faithful martyr, who was slain among you, where Satan dwelleth.

Now let's just stop for a moment and consider who Satan Really is; because there are a lot of false ideas out there, and of course, they are entirely unbiblical.

Isaiah 14:12-15 & "The Five I Wills of Lucifer"

·                 "I will ascent into heaven" (v. 13).

·                 "I will exalt my throne above the starts of God" (v. 13)

·                 "I will also sit on the mount of the congregation" (. 13)

·                 "I will ascend above the heights of the clouds" (v. 14)

·                 "I will be like the Most High: (v. 14)

Let's also take a look at Ezekiel 28:12-19:

·                 Satan is a created spirit-being (as are all the angels; (v. 15)

·                 He was created perfect (v. 12,15)

·                 He was of great beauty and exalted in position and honor.

·                 He was full of wisdom (v. 12)

·                 From all indications, he was an archangel.

·                 He was "the anointed cherub" (v. 14).

·                 He was "the cherub who covers" (v. 14a).

From "Pergamos: The Worldly Church (Part 4)

"The City" (on-line sermon video)

Consider The City - In the City there wer those who were faithful; however, they didn't try to correct the false teaching and actions around them.

The Correspondent (2:12b) - is none other than Jesus Christ himself.

·                 He who has the sharp two-edged sword" . A two-edged sword cuts both ways.

·                 And He exposed both the Positive and the Negative

The Commendation - (2:13)

" I know you works."

"You hold fast to my name."

"You did not deny My faith."

"Even in the days in which Antipas was my faithful martyr, who was killed among you, where Satan dwells."

From "Pergamos: The Worldly Church (Part 5 & 6)  Idolatry & Immorality - Part 1

                                                                            Idolatry & Immorality - Part 2

 The Concern - (2:14-15)

"You have there those who hold the doctrine of Balaam . . ."

"You have also those who hold to the doctrine of the Nicolaitans . . . "

Idolatry and Immorality had infiltrated the church, and as a result, these things

had weakened and poisoned the church body.

I hope you enjoy these Sermon notes that go along with the messages.
